Manchester United slipped to a shock 2-0 defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage with Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney seeing red in either half.
Scholes got his marching orders after 18 minutes as he threw his hands up to keep out Bobby Zamora's close-range header.
Captain Danny Murphy stepped up and sent Edwin der Sar the wrong way from the spot to give Fulham the lead.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, United did recover their composure in the second period and were only denied by a string of fine saves from Mark Schwarzer.
Darren Fletcher brought a fine save from Schwarzer before Cristiano Ronaldo saw his powerful header denied by the big Australian.
But the best was yet to come when, in the 64th minute, Schwarzer produced an incredible double save as he denied Park Ji-Sung before blocked Rooney's follow-up with his legs when the England ace looked certain to score.
As United pressed, they were hit with a hammer blow by substitute Zoltán Gera who despatched an acrobatic volley beyond van der Sar to seal the victory.
The Red Devils finished the match with nine men after Rooney saw red late on for throwing the ball at referee Phil Dowd.

Chelsea failed to close the gap to leaders Manchester United as they lost 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in a thrilling London derby at White Hart Lane.
With kick-off delayed by 30 minutes due to a security scare, the Blues knew their title rivals were struggling at Craven Cottage but could not capitalise on the slip.
Spurs frustrated their fierce rivals during a goalless first half with Petr Čech required to beat away Robbie Keane's effort on two occasions.
Chelsea fell behind within five minutes of the restart as Luka Modrić produced an excellent low finish from the edge of the area after Aaron Lennon's clever low cut-back from the right wing as he shaped to cross.
Blues boss Guus Hiddink threw John Terry up front in the dying minutes and the England captain forced Heurelho Gomes into a stunning one-handed save.
Nicolas Anelka was also denied by Gomes in the closing stages with Alex's header from the resulting corner striking the crossbar but bouncing to safety.

Arsenal strengthened their grip on fourth place and dumped Newcastle United further into the relegation mire with a 3-1 win at St James' Park.
The home side should have taken the lead when they were handed a 24th-minute penalty after Manuel Almunia had felled Ryan Taylor.
Obafemi Martins stepped up to the spot only to see his weak penalty easily saved by the Spaniard.
And Martins was made to pay after Arsenal went ahead through Nicklas Bendtner's header from an Andrei Arshavin free-kick in the 57th minute.
But Newcastle equalised almost immediately when Martins capitalised on poor Arsenal defending to score.
However, the Toon faithful were quickly silenced when Abou Diaby restored the lead on 64 minutes. With Steven Taylor off the pitch receiving treatment, Diaby played a one-two with Robin van Persie before burying the ball beyond Steve Harper.
And three minutes later the game was over as Samir Nasri was played in by van Persie to fire a low shot under Harper at his near post.
