Liverpool reignited their title bid with a stunning 4-1 victory over defending champions Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Not since QPR ran out 4-1 success at the home of the Red Devils on New Year's Day 1992 have the champions conceded so many on home turf.

Things didn’t start well for the visitors, though, as they were fell behind after 23 minutes when Cristiano Ronaldo dispatched his 17th goal of the season from the penalty spot after Pepe Reina had needlessly felled Park Ji-Sung.

But Liverpool were level within five minutes when Fernando Torres capitalised on a rare mistake from Nemanja Vidić to fire past Edwin van der Sar.

And a second spot kick of the match gave Liverpool the lead at half time. Steven Gerrard was fouled by Patrice Evra in the box, with the Reds skipper picking himself up from the ground to dispatch the penalty.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson waited until less than 20 minutes remained before he made the introductions of Dimitar Berbatov, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.

Any hope United had, evaporated within a minute of Ferguson's triple substitution as Vidić was shown red for a cynical foul on Gerrard.

From the resulting free-kick, Fábio Aurélio curled a left-foot beauty beyond a motionless van der Sar.

United's woes were worsened in the final minute when substitute Andrea Dossena latched onto Reina's long clearance to lob van der Sar and sealed a fantastic win for Liverpool.
