Steven Gerrard's hat-trick helped Liverpool thrash Aston Villa 5-0 and put the Reds within a point of leaders Manchester United, which still have a game in hand.
It was Liverpool's biggest win of the season as they have now scored 11 goals in their last three league matches, giving the team a better goal difference over United.
The hosts went ahead after just eight minutes when Dirk Kuyt reacted quickest to blast home the rebound after Xabi Alonso headed Gerrard’s free-kick against the bar.
Pepe Reina, reaching a club record of 100 clean sheets in 197 matches, pulled off a great save to his left to claw away a towering header from John Carew on 24 minutes.
Reina then started the second in the 33rd minute as the goalkeeper sent an 80-yard clearance that bounced once on the edge of the area before Albert Riera smashed the dropping ball high into the net.
Gerrard claimed his first of his treble when he tucked away the penalty on 39 minutes after Riera was brought down in the box by Nigel Reo-Coker.
Five minutes after the break Liverpool were four in front. Carlos Cuéllar brought down Kuyt on the edge of the box and Gerrard sent the resulting free kick into the bottom corner.
And things went from bad to worse for Villa as Brad Friedel was sent off for bringing down Fernando Torres in the area on 65 minutes.
Gerrard stepped up to take the spot-kick and drilled the ball past substitute stopper Brad Guzan to complete his hat-trick.
