Mourinho critical of Beckham's commitment to US football

Inter Milan boss José Mourinho has taken a swipe at David Beckham, implying that the midfielder moved to the United States only for the money.

Beckham joined Los Angeles Galaxy in July 2007, becaming one of the most highly paid footballers on the planet, but the former England captain made little impression on the pitch and joined Italian giants AC Milan in January.

The deal was initially a short-term loan arrangement set up to help him stay fit during the Major League Soccer off-season, but a string of impressive performances have seen Becks extend his stay at the San Siro until the end of the season, a deal which will cause him to miss half of the MLS season.

And Mourinho, who is in the US to inspect the facilities that will be used by the Italian giants on their summer tour to the country, has now slammed the 33-year-old's actions.

He said: "What do I think about football in America?

"It takes more than an important player to make a competition equally important.

"They need people who are not thinking of coming here to take money and then leaving, but people who want to work in this country to insert themselves into American football."
