Real Madrid kept alive their hopes of pipping Barcelona to the title following a 5-2 victory over 10-man Athletic Bilbao in a thrilling and fiery encounter at San Mamés.
The visitors opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when Arjen Robben charged into the area before lashing home a left-footed drive in off the crossbar.
Gabriel Heinze nodded home Wesley Sneijder's free-kick on 34 minutes before retreating to poke David López's centering pass into his own goal two minutes later.
And a moment of madness from Francisco Yeste moments later gave the Basque giants too much work to do as he was shown a straight red card for a shove on Iker Casillas.
The hosts, though, were back on level terms before half-time when Fernando Llorente powered a header towards the top corner that Casillas made a mess of keeping out.
But Real needed just 90 seconds after re-start to regain the lead with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar continuing his good form by squeezing a low shot past the unmoved Gorka Iraizoz at his near post.
Huntelaar then netted his sixth in his last five matches on 61 minutes as the former Ajax hitman showed great composure and skill to lift the ball over the outrushing Iraizoz.
Gonzalo Higuaín added his side's fifth from the penalty spot late on after Marcelo had been brought down inside the area by Andoni Iraola.
Elsewhere, substitute Pablo Hernández netted a late goal for 10-man Valencia to salvage a 1-1 draw against Recreativo Huelva at the Mestalla.
