Atlético Madrid rallied from two goals down to beat Barcelona 4-3 in a breathtaking encounter at the Vicente Calderón.
There were scoring chances in the opening four minutes with Sergio Agüero coming close and having a John Heitinga goal ruled out for a marginal offside.
But it was the visitors who opened the scoring as Thierry Henry curled a loose ball into the top left corner of the goal with the inside of his right foot on 19 minutes.
Lionel Messi added a second on the half-hour mark after dancing through the home defence and coolly sliding the ball home.
But Diego Forlán reduced the deficit with a dipping drive from 25 yards in the 32nd minute, and Agüero drew Atlético level with an individual effort ten minutes into the second half.
Barça regaind the lead on 72 minutes when Eiður Guðjohnsen set-up Henry for an easy tap-in after a 2-on-1 break.
Atlético refused to roll over, though, and they were handed a chance to get back on level terms 10 minutes from time when they were awarded a penalty after Henry was adjudged to have brought down substitute Florent Sinama-Pongolle inside the area. Forlán converted the spot-kick to set up a granstand finish.
And a defensive error by captain Carles Puyol with 60 seconds left on the clock allowed Agüero to slot the ball past goalkeeper Víctor Valdés to spark wild scenes at both Vicente Calderón and no doubt at the Bernabéu as well.
