AC Milan snatched all three points with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Cagliari at the San Siro.

The hosts lost Ronaldinho and Alexandre Pato to illness on the morning of the match, leaving coach Carlo Ancelotti with Filippo Inzaghi as the only recognised striker in his squad.

Milan appeared tired after their UEFA Cup clash at Werder Bremen on Wednesday night and Cagliari had the better chances early in the match.

Andrea Cossu found Robert Acquafresca from six yards, who turned Daniele Bonera to shoot and find Christian Abbiati's feet on the line.

The Rossoneri found the net on 22 minutes when Inzaghi scored from Clarence Seedorf's assist, but the goal was correctly ruled out for offside.

Abbiati then had to fly to palm Cossu's long range effort out from under the bar after Acquafresca had held up the ball.

After the break Cossu went even closer as his powerful strike from 25 yards smashed against the inside of the upright, much to Abbiati's relief.

Milan went ahead against the run of play in the 65th minute when Seedorf pounced after a defensive mix-up between Cagliari goalkeeper Federico Marchetti and defender Diego López and sidefooted home from 12 meters.
