West Ham midfielder Julien Faubert has joined Real Madrid until the end of the season on a loan deal, with the Spanish giants having an option to buy him on a permanent basis.

The Hammers confirmed on Friday evening that the 25-year-old Frenchman had been given permission to speak to Los Merengues over a possible move.

An initial loan deal with Real has now been struck, with the Spanish club paying £1.5 million to West Ham to secure Faubert's services for the remainder of the season.

Should they decide to make the move permanent in the summer, it is thought that a fee of £4.5 million has been set between the two clubs.

A statement on Real's official website read: "Real Madrid and West Ham United have reached an agreement for the loan of the French player Julien Faubert until the end of this season.

"The signed deal establishes a loan move until June 30, the date in which the technical staff of the club will decide if it suits them to exercise a right to buy the player for the next three years.

"Faubert, who successfully passed the medical this morning, will be presented in the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu on Monday February 2 at 11 o'clock."

Faubert moved to Upton Park from Bordeaux in July 2007 for £6 million but soon suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon, which left him on the sidelines for the first half of last season.
