AC Milan moved clear in third place in Serie A after a 1-0 win over Fiorentina at the San Siro, but the result was overshadowed by protests from the home fans, before and during the match, against the possible sale of Kaká to Manchester City.
Last week all eyes were on David Beckham, this time Kaká was in the spotlight after the club confirmed they were considering a £108 million bid from City.
The Rossoneri fans staged a protest calling for the Brazilian to stay and chanted his name for over 90 minutes and implored the club not to sell him.
There was tension during the half-time break, as furious supporters tried to get into the VIP area to insult vice-president Adriano Galliani and were waving money to suggest this was all the club cared about.
However, it was to be referee Roberto Rosetti who stole the limelight early on with a controversial penalty call.
Barely five minutes were on the clock when he pointed to the spot and prepared the red card after Mario Santana fell over the arms of Christian Abbiati. But the linesman informed him that Abbiati clearly got the ball and Rosetti reversed his decision and recommenced play with a drop ball.
Fiorentina were still protesting when Milan took the lead moments later through Alexandre Pato's sixth goal in the last four league fixtures. The youngster was released by Andrea Pirlo's first time pass and curled a low shot in off the underside of the far post with the outside of his right foot.
Beckham nearly got his first Milan goal at the end of the first half when he was sent into the penalty area by Pato, but his low angled drive brought a fingertip save out of Marco Storari.
The Viola went close several times in the second half, but not even a red card for Marek Jankulovski in stoppage time could alter the outcome.
On Saturday's early match, Mario Frick's goal 15 minutes from time was enough to give Siena a a 1-0 win over Reggina.
