Sagnol reaches end of the road?

Bayern Munich and France defender Willy Sagnol is ending his career at the age of 31 because of a persistent Achilles injury.

Sagnol has not kicked a ball since France's 4-2 loss to Netherlands at Euro 2008 when the full-back suffered the injury which simply refuses to heal.

Despite surgery, the Frenchman is showing no signs of making a recovery, which is why Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge now expects him to call it a day.

Rummenigge told the Suddeutsche Zeitung newspaper: "I met Willy on Wednesday and he told me it made no sense because no matter how he trained, Willy always felt pain in his Achilles tendon.

"Therefore we can only show understanding when a player says to us 'That's it, I'm giving up'."

Sagnol is the only member of the Bayern team that won the Champions League in 2001 still on the roster. He arrived in Bayern in 2000 and has played 184 games for the Bavarians. He still had another year on his contract.

In recent weeks, he has been linked with a job as director of sport at former club AS Monaco from next season, with Rummenigge insisting: "He has what it takes to do that."
