Defending champions Manchester United surged past Chelsea into second place and within two points of Premier League leaders Liverpool after a 1-0 win over Wigan at Old Trafford.
The result also means that three more points at Bolton on Saturday will take them top for the first time this season with Liverpool playing Everton on Monday.
United went in front after just 51 seconds on the clock. Dimitar Berbatov spread the ball out to Cristiano Ronaldo who went past Maynor Figueroa with a neat step over before sending a low cross into the six-yard box for Wayne Rooney to simply tap home.
Rooney’s joy was shortlived, though, as he limped off six minutes later after pulling a hamstring that triggered his immediate departure.
Carlos Tévez, who came on for Rooney, should have wrapped the game up when he raced through on 25 minutes. He had only the keeper to beat but his touch was too heavy allowing Titus Bramble to get back.
Wigan composed themselves after their nervy start and pressurised United, especially in the second half but the home side held out for a valuable three points.
