Manchester United boosted their Premier League title hopes as they beat a major rival for the first time this season with a 3-0 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford.
The defending champions had lost at Arsenal and Liverpool this season and managed just a draw at Chelsea, but mostly dominated the Blues side who could not manage a single shot on target throughout the match.
While the loss was Chelsea's first away defeat in the league since December 2007 and their heaviest for two years, United has not conceded a goal in eight successive Premier League matches and has the league's best defense with just 10 goals allowed.
United created the better opportunities in a fiercely competitive first half and they thought they had scored the opening goal when Cristiano Ronaldo headed in a Ryan Giggs cross in the 45th minute. But the effort was disallowed with the officials not happy with a clever corner routine Wayne Rooney and Giggs had conjured up.
Giggs then re-took the corner, which was flicked on by Dimitar Berbatov and unmarked Nemanja Vidić popped up at the back post to head in.
The Blues were unable to respond at the start of the second period and fell 2-0 behind when Patrice Evra collected a back-heel from Ronaldo and the cross was finished off by Rooney.
Ronaldo was abused during the match by Chelsea fans who sickeningly chanted You should have died in the tunnel — a reference to him crashing his Ferrari on the way to training last week — but he capped an excellent performance with an 87th-minute cross to Berbatov to tap in.
Also Sunday, Maynor Figueroa snatched a late winner to give Wigan a 1-0 win over Tottenham at the JJB Stadium.
