Valencia blew a two-goal advantage against Villarreal as their derby rivals came back to salvage a 3-3 draw at Mestalla.
The home side made the perfect start when Rubén Baraja arrived unmarked in the box to head home Joaquín's cross with just over 60 seconds on the clock.
And it was 2-0 after 10 minutes as David Villa cut back inside the area and beat goalkeeper Diego López at his near post.
Villarreal pulled one back on the stroke of half time when substitute Fabricio Fuentes headed home from inside the six-yard box.
Villa somehow put his shot over the bar from close range on 75 minutes before Villarreal leveled a minute later when Joseba Llorente fired home at the second attempt after Renan had parried his initial effort.
Valencia responded immediately and restored the lead when substitute Edu rose highest at the far post to head beyond López.
But the Yellow Submarine rescued a point when Giuseppe Rossi converted from the spot in the 84th minute after Joan Capdevila went to ground under a soft but untidy challenge from Joaquín.
In Saturday's early match, 10-men Sevilla fought back from a goal down to defeat Deportivo La Coruña 3-1 at the Riazor and climb into second place.
