Arjen Robben 31 |
Arjen Robben scored a spectacular goal to inspire Real Madrid moved up to third in La Liga as the reigning champions secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Villarreal at the Bernabéu.
Los Merengues has now won three of their last four matches in all competitions since Juande Ramos replaced Bernd Schuster last month.
Real, whom new signings Lassana Diarra and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar were handed their debuts, had been unlucky not to go ahead in the 12th minute when Robben's deflected shot hit the Villarreal crossbar with goalkeeper Diego Lopez stranded.
In the end it was a moment of magic from Robben just after the half hour mark that separated the two sides, as the Dutch winger cut in from the touchline and evaded three Villarreal players before curling a brilliant 25-yard shot into the top corner.
Huntelaar, who joined Real from Ajax last month, should have made it 2-0 in the 40th with Lopez diving to smother his shot from close-range.
Diarra nearly spoiled his debut when his misplaced pass almost allowed Villarreal to equalise on 53 minutes but Real goalkeeper Iker Casillas denied substitute Joseba Llorente's goal-bound shot with a world-class save.
Despite the win Real remain 12 points behind leaders Barcelona, while Villarreal dropped to seventh place with 29 points.
