Real Madrid beat Deportivo La Coruña 1-0 to leave the Spanish champion as the nearest rival to runaway league leaders Barcelona.
The hosts enjoyed possession during the first half but they produced little threat in front of Depor goal and a largely drab opening period looked destined to finish goalless until Raúl struck six minutes before the break.
Lassana Diarra sent an in-swinging cross beyond Deportivo goalkeeper Gustavo Munúa and Raúl got the slightest of touches with his head to divert the ball home from close range.
The start to the second half suggested there would be more entertainment on offer with Arjen Robben bursting down the right side before sending a shot just over the far corner.
Depor went close for an equaliser in the 67th minute when winger Ángel Lafita went for goal only to be denied by an acrobatic save by Iker Casillas.
The win means that Real stay second, 12 points behind leaders Barcelona.
Real Mallorca climbed off the bottom of La Liga after a stunning 3-1 success over Valencia at the Son Moix.
Valencia went behind after eight minutes when José Manuel Jurado clipped a rebound over goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.
José Luís Martí doubled the lead with a penalty on 41 minutes before Jurado made it 3-0 almost straight from the re-start.
A stunned Valencia responded with a dominant showing after the break but had only manage a single reply when Vicente played a one-two with David Silva and slotted home on 72 minutes.
Mallorca now move ahead of Espanyol and Osasuna and into 18th place with 17 points.
