Renato 45 |
Sevilla moved level on points with second-placed Valencia after a 1-0 home victory over Villarreal.
Renato struck the only goal of the match as he got the benefit of a controversial offside call to claim the winner on the stroke of half-time.
And the home side held on comfortably as the Yellow Submarine were reduced to 10 men following the dismissal of Joseba Llorente in the 53rd minute.
The win strengthened Sevilla's bid for Champions League qualification, but still leaves them eight points adrift leaders Barcelona.
In Sunday's late kick-off, Atlético Madrid moved up to fifth after seeing off battling Real Betis 2-0 at the Vicente Calderón.
Los Rojiblancos have been superb in recent weeks and they took the lead after 20 minutes courtesy of Maxi Rodríguez.
Diego Forlán then saw his header go just wide of the far post as the home side created much the better of the openings in the first 45 minutes.
Atlético sealed the points with ten minutes to go when Sergio Agüero curled in his shot past Betis goalkeeper Espinosa Casto from the edge of the box before leaving the pitch seconds later to a standing ovation after being replaced.
The win means Javier Aguirre's side replaced bitter rivals Real Madrid in the top five of La Liga.
