Bayern Munich have confirmed Germany international Bastian Schweinsteiger has renewed his contract with the club, ending transfer links with a move abroad.

The 24-year-old put pen to paper on the deal over the weekend with his previous contract due to expire in the summer.

Schweinsteiger's new contract with Bayern will run until June 2012.

"We are very pleased that we were able to close the deal with one of our important players in Bastian Schweinsteiger," said chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on the club's website.

Schweinsteiger always said he would prefer to stay at Bayern than look for another club.

The midfielder has come through the ranks with Bayern, whom he joined as a schoolboy in 1998.
