Dimitar Berbatov 69 |
Manchester United grabbed a crucial three points after a 1-0 win over Middlesbrough to reduce their gap with leaders Liverpool to seven points.
Sir Alex Ferguson's men attacked in waves last night, but credit must go to Boro, especially goalkeeper Ross Turnbull, who put in a disciplined performance which very nearly paid off with a point.
In the fifth minute, a Dimitar Berbatov touch opened things up for Michael Carrick to play square but Wayne Rooney’s shot was well saved by Turnbull.
Cristiano Ronaldo picked up the loose ball and tried a shot from a seemingly impossible angle but Turnbull was forced to save again.
Then two Ronaldo free-kicks from either side of the pitch went wide and straight at Turnbull.
Ronaldo had a few goes with free-kicks as Boro could only stop him by foul means, and their close attention finally riled the Portuguese star.
He was involved in a bust-up with Emmanuel Pogatetz as he spent much of his walk to the tunnel complaining to referee Martin Atkinson he should have had a penalty after being hauled to the ground in the area off the ball by Pogatetz.
After the re-start, United again dominated possession and the pressure finally told on 69 minutes.
Berbatov finally broke the deadlock for United as he volleyed home from close range after Carrick's cross had bounced back off Boro defender David Wheater.
It should have been two four minutes later, but Park Ji-Sung produced a contender for miss of the season when he somehow put Gary Neville’s low cross over the bar from four yards.
