Robin van Persie 24 | Robbie Keane 42 |
Robbie Keane equalised for Liverpool in a 1-1 draw at 10-man Arsenal to put the Reds two points clear atop of the Premier League.
Reds boss Rafa Benítez was absent while he recovers from surgery to remove kidney stones, but he directed proceedings from his sick-bed and kept relaying messages to assistant Sammy Lee, via his goalkeeping coach Xavi Valero.
Benítez would not have been resting easy when Arsenal took the lead on 24 minutes through Robin van Persie, collecting Samir Nasri's pass from the halfway line on his chest before taking the ball away from Jamie Carragher with his left foot and smashing it with his right beyond Pepe Reina.
But Keane, who returned to Liverpool's team after some poor performances, replied in the 42nd minute when he on to meet a long ball out of defence from Daniel Agger, outpaced the Arsenal defenders and rifled home into the roof of the net.
The Gunners played the whole of the second half minus skipper Cesc Fàbregas, who was injured his knee in the challenge with fellow Spaniard Xabi Alonso.
As if that was not bad enough, Emmanuel Adebayor, who had already been booked for a challenge on Emiliano Insua in the first half, left his foot in again on Álvaro Arbeloa and was dismissed by referee Howard Webb.
Arsène Wenger was infuriated, but replays suggested the Togo hitman had indeed gone in with a raised boot, rather than a flaying arm, as he tried to shrug off Arbeloa.
Despite their numerical advantage, Liverpool could not find a winner and have only a two-point lead over Chelsea, with the Blues in action away to Everton on Monday.
