Obafemi Martins 77

Danny Guthrie 89

Michael Owen celebrated his 29th birthday by scoring his seventh Premier League goal of the season to help Newcastle beat Portsmouth 3-0 in an entertaining match at Fratton Park.

Obafemi Martins almost put the visitors ahead in the 20th minute when his swerving drive from 30 yards past the outstretched arm of goalkeeper David James but crashed back off the post.

Portsmouth then had two penalty shouts, with Nicky Butt clearing the ball with an arm as he went up for a header, and Jermain Defoe obstructed in the box by Sébastien Bassong.

Six minutes into the second half, Owen finally broke the deadlock by flicking the ball over James from close range.

Martins then doubled the advantage 13 minutes from time as he turned home Danny Guthrie's pass to put the match beyond reach.

Guthrie hammered home a late third from a counterattack as Newcastle moved out of the relegation zone.

Gianfranco Zola returned to Stamford Bridge and saw his West Ham side held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw.

Zola, voted the club's best-ever player after a memorable seven-year spell at Stamford Bridge, earned a rapturous welcome as the former Blues striker emerged from the tunnel to take his places in the visiting dugout.

Chelsea dominated possession throughout but it was the struggling Hammers who snatched a surprise lead in the 33rd minute through Craig Bellamy.

Nicolas Anelka equalised within six minutes of the restart as he coolly slotted the ball underneath the advancing Robert Green for his 16th goal of the season and his 100th Premier League goal overall.

It could have been even worse for the home side had Petr Čech failed to deny Carlton Cole's golden stoppage-time opportunity.
