Lionel Messi 90 |
Samuel Eto'o went from zero to hero as the former Bernabéu striker atoned his second-half penalty failure with a late goal to help Barcelona to a 2-0 over Real Madrid in El Clásico watched by over 96,000 spectators at a wet Camp Nou.
Pep Guardiola's side, which had amassed 44 goals in their previous 13 league matches, began the match brightly.
Real, though, had the clearest chance of the first half as Roysten Drenthe was denied by Víctor Valdés when one on one.
Barça then rewarded with a penalty in the 70th minute when Míchel Salgado brought down youngster Sergi Busquets.
However, the team's hopes of a goal were dashed when the excellent Iker Casillas dived low to his left to parry the spot.
Eto'o, though, redeemed himself seven minutes from time as he netted from close range after Carles Puyol had headed down a Xavi corner.
And Lionel Messi then made sure of the victory as he chipped past Casillas in injury time, with Fabio Cannavaro failing in a desperate attempt to clear the ball off the line.
Also Saturday, Valencia moved into second place as they came from behind to defeat 10-man Espanyol 2-1 at Mestalla.
