Manchester United and Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo has won the 2008 Ballon d’Or award, France Football said on its website on Tuesday.

The prize was voted on by 96 journalists from all over the world.

The 23-year-old was the clear favourite to land the prestigious award as he netted 42 goals last term to help the Red Devils claimed Premier League and Champions League glory to cap a truly remarkable year.

Ronaldo, who finished runner-up to AC Milan ace Kaká in 2007, beat Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Fernando Torres of Liverpool to win the award.

The former Sporting Lisbon man has claimed a lot of individual awards already this year as he has won the FIFPro World Player of the Year honour, along with the English Football Writers Award and the Premier League Players' Player of the Year.

Ronaldo is the first United player to win the prize since George Best 40 years ago.
