Spanish football federation president Ángel María Villar has claimed his priority is to bring the 2018 World Cup to Spain, moments after he was re-elected on Monday.

Villar, who was the sole candidate for the position, was re-elected for the fifth time since taking over from Jose Luis Roca in 1988.

The former Athletic Bilbao and Spain defender has called for the country to unite in a bid to land football's premier competition.

"One of the fundamental objectives would be to bring Spain a World Cup, which could be in 2018," Villar said after his re-election. "Being united, having a united administration, a united Spanish society, our bid will be invincible."

Spain, which hosted the event in 1982, will face stiff competition in their bid to host the 2018 World Cup with England, Australia, Russia and Qatar all announcing their interest, while the Netherlands and Belgium are also expected to make a joint bid.
