AS Roma rescued some respectability and provided their fans with a rare reason to smile after they claimed a 1-0 win over city rivals Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico.

Striker Julio Baptista was the hero for the Giallorossi as the former Real Madrid hitman struck the only goal of the match after 50 minutes.

Both sides ended the match with 10 men as Lazio’s Cristian Ledesma and Roma’s Simone Perotta were both dismissed following second yellow cards.

The win moved Roma three points clear of the drop zone, while Lazio remain five points off leaders Inter Milan.

AC Milan climbed back into second place and a point behind leaders Inter Milan thanks to a controversial 1-0 win over Chievo on Sunday afternoon.

The Rossoneri produced a poor performance that only earned the victory after Kaká converted a dubious penalty in the 15th minute.

The spot kick was awarded after Kaká had been tripped by Davide Mandelli as he tried to collect a pass from Ronaldinho, although replays appeared to show that the foul occurred outside the area.

Milan midfielder Clarence Seedorf nearly made it 2-0 in stoppage time.
