AC Milan beat 10-man Napoli 1-0 to go top of Serie A for the first time since May 2004, when Milan last won the scudetto.
Napoli themselves could have gone top with victory in Milan but they suffered a massive blow after Cristian Maggio received a second yellow card in the 44th minute.
As expected Milan dominated the play after the break and they were awarded a penalty five minutes from time after a shocking decision by the referee.
The referee gave a penalty to the hosts for a handball against Michele Pazienza that was both outside the area and totally involuntary from a ball fired at him from close range.
Justice was done as Gennaro Iezzo brilliantly saved Kaká's penalty but only two minutes later Napoli striker Germán Denis flicked a Ronaldinho free-kick past Iezzo to break Neapolitan hearts.
Previous leaders Udinese came from behind to draw 2-2 with Genoa.
Udinese, which have an eight-game unbeaten streak, got off to a great start as Gaetano D'Agostino struck from the penalty spot after just four minutes.
However, the visitors equalised through a Diego Milito penalty in the 64th minute and three minutes later substitute Giuseppe Sculli fired Genoa in front.
But Italy striker Fabio Quagliarella leveled for Udinese nine minutes later by flicking home a cross from Simone Pepe.
The win draws Udinese level on 21 points with Inter Milan, which defeated Reggina 3-2 Saturday.
Fiorentina failed to move into the top three as they lost 1-0 to Siena in the Tuscan derby.
The Viola were playing without Serie A goal leader Alberto Gilardino who was serving the second game of a two-game suspension.
Siena, which have no losses at home this year and has allowed just one goal, scored the only goal through Houssine Kharja's header 14 minutes from time.
