Roman Pavlyuchenko 9 |
Tottenham continue their rise from the ashes under Harry Redknapp as they saw off 10-man Blackburn 1-0 at White Hart Lane.
The match began brightly with both sides settling early on but it was the hosts who took the lead after just nine minutes.
When Aaron Lennon is on fire, no defender can live with him as Blackburn’s full-back Martin Olsson found to his cost.
The defender tried to beat Lennon but lost possession, and the winger burst down the right flank before cutting the ball back to Roman Pavlyuchenko who smashed home past ex-Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson.
Pavlyuchenko could have doubled the lead in the 18th minute when he flicked a David Bentley free-kick onto the post.
Lennon repeatedly created openings for Spurs with his dazzling runs, and Olsson was dismissed for two bookings as he was twice penalised for bringing down the lively winger.
Spurs continued to look for their second and Tom Huddlestone curled an effort from 30 yards that went just over Robinson's crossbar, while André Ooijer blocked when Darren Bent raced through.
The victory lifts Redknapp's team out of the last three spots while Blackburn slipped to next-to-last.
In Sunday's other match, West Ham won 1-0 at Sunderland to end their winless streak in seven matches thanks to Valon Behrami's goal.
