Obafemi Martins scored both goals in Newcastle 2-0 win over Aston Villa to lift them to 14th place, ahead of arch-rivals Sunderland on goal difference.
It not only blasted the Magpies out of the relegation zone but it has given a major boost for a side which had not kept a clean sheet since August 23.
But it might have been so different if Gabriel Agbonlahor had not completely missed the ball in front of goal on 22 minutes.
Newcastle were increasingly stretched in the second half and broke the deadlock on the hour mark.
Joey Barton lofted the ball up to Martins who turned Martin Laursen beautifully before firing a left-foot drive past Brad Friedel and into the bottom corner.
It was nearly two when Nicky Butt rattled the woodwork with a free-kick.
However, the match was effectively over eight minutes from time when Jonás Gutiérrez ripped down the right and crossed for Martins who tapped home from close range.
