Chelsea suffered a shock defeat at the Italian capital as they slumped to a 3-1 against Serie A strugglers AS Roma.
The Blues were dominant for 34 minutes before veteran Christian Panucci turned in a cross from Cicinho past goalkeeper Petr Čech to hand Roma the lead.
And the scoreline got even worse for the visitors as Mirko Vučinić struck twice after the break to make it 3-0.
Chelsea reduced the deficit through captain John Terry with 15 minutes remaining, but it proved no more than a consolation for them who finished the match with 10-man after Deco's ridiculous late dismissal.
Bordeaux moved onto six points, level with Roma, as they triumphed 2-1 away to CFR Cluj.
Yoann Gourcuff gave Bordeaux the lead after six minutes before Dani equalised for the Romanian outfit soon after.
But Brazilian Wendel struck the winner in the 38th minute to give the visitors their second Group A win.
GROUP B
Inter Milan left it late to salvage a point from their six-goal thriller against minnows Anorthosis Famagusta in Nicosia.
Anorthosis goalkeeper Arjan Beqaj gifted the Italians the lead in the 13th minute, allowing teenager Mario Balotelli to tap in a rebound.
But a defensive howler from goalkeeper Júlio César and defender Nicolás Burdisso allowed Cédric Bardon to tap home the equaliser.
José Mourinho's men restored the lead at the end of half-time when Marco Materazzi headed home from a corner, but the hosts responded immediately through substitute Georgios Panagi.
Five minutes into the second half, Nikolaos Frousos fired Anorthosis in front after another error from Burdisso, but Inter continued to battle and grabbed a late leveller thanks to Julio Cruz with 10 minutes remaining.
Inter remain top of Group B with eight points, three points ahead of second-placed Anorthosis.
Panathinaikos claimed their first Group B victory with a 3-0 triumph away to Werder Bremen.
Vangelis Mantzios opened the scoring just before the hour mark as he found the bottom corner of the net with a right-foot effort.
A stunning volley from Giorgos Karagounis gave the Greeks a two-goal cushion and Alexis Tziolis completed the scoring seven minutes from time.
The win moves Panathinaikos above Bremen into third place with both sides are still in with a chance of qualification.
GROUP C
Barcelona booked their place in the knockout stages despite being held to a 1-1 draw by visiting FC Basel.
Lionel Messi put Barça ahead just two minutes after being brought off the bench, playing a one-two with Thierry Henry before rolling the ball past Franco Costanzo.
But Basel's substitute Eren Derdiyok stunned Camp Nou with his leveler eight minutes from time to give his side hope of sneaking into the UEFA Cup.
Portuguese outfit Sporting Lisbon also progressed from Group C after a 1-0 home win over Shakhtar Donetsk.
An excellent finish from substitute Derlei 17 minutes from time was enough to take Sporting through to the next phase.
Shakhtar can catch Sporting on points but has lost twice to the Portuguese side and therefore cannot finish ahead.
GROUP D
Liverpool needed a highly debateable penalty by Steven Gerrard in the fifth minute of added time to salvage a dramatic 1-1 draw against Atlético Madrid.
With former Atlético's prince Fernando Torres watching from the stands, the visitors took the lead on 37 minutes when captain Maxi Rodríguez collected a pass from Antonio Lopez, took one touch to take him away from Jamie Carragher and shot across goalkeeper Pepe Reina just inside the far post.
Atlético will believe they were robbed of a place in the last 16 as they were punished a disputed penalty for a debatable foul on Gerrard by Mariano Pernía.
The Anfield skipper stepped up and converted the penalty, sending goalkeeper Leo Franco the wrong way.
Atlético and Liverpool stayed tied atop Group D, but the goal cost Javier Aguirre's side early progress to the next round.
Mamadou Niang grabbed a second-half brace as Marseille thrashed PSV Eindhoven 3-0 at the Stade Velodrome.
Bakari Koné opened the scoring after 30 minutes as he was played in by Hatem Ben Arfa's precise ball before rounding the goalkeeper and slotting home.
Senegal striker Niang then struck a quick-fire brace in the space of eight minutes to seal their first Group D win.
The result leaves both sides five points off Liverpool and Atlético with two matches to play.
