Real Madrid midfielder Rubén de la Red collapsed during his side's Copa del Rey match with Real Unión in Irun.
The incident reminded many of a similar situation when fourteen months ago, Sevilla player Antonio Puerta collapsed on the pitch and died three days later after suffering prolonged cardiac arrest.
The 23-year-old, who also represented Spain at Euro 2008, fell as he was walking away from the penalty area in the 13th minute, silencing the crowd at Gal Stadium.
Medical staff immediately attended to the player, who required treatment for two minutes on the pitch before being stretchered off, having appeared to recover consciousness.
Spanish newspaper Marca report that his fainting was down to low blood pressure and was not in danger.
However, de la Red will remain in hospital overnight for precautionary reasons.
