Steven Gerrard marked his full return to the Liverpool side with style as he scored both goals to secure a 2-1 win at Marseille.
But it was the hosts who went ahead after 23 minutes when skipper Lorik Cana beat Liverpool's offside trap to finish Benoit Cheyrou's brilliant pass.
Rafa Benitez's men levelled just three minutes later when Gerrard brilliantly swung a first-time curling effort from 25-yards that flew past Steve Mandanda into the far corner.
The Liverpool skipper put his side in front in the 32nd minute from the penalty spot after Ronald Zubar had tripped Ryan Babel.
Gerrard was forced to take the spot-kick twice, but both times he sent Mandanda the wrong way.
That took his tally in Europe to 25 goals - breaking Michael Owen's club record.
