Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has offered the biggest deal in club's history of £21 million for Michael Owen to stay at St James' Park.
A three-year contract worth £140,000 a week would make the England striker as one of the Premier League’s highest-paid stars.
The 28-year-old, whose current £115,000-a-week deal expires next summer, could leave on a free transfer unless Newcastle tie him down now.
A Toon insider told The Sun: "It’s the best contract the club has ever offered and shows the owner is prepared to spend big when it comes to keeping the best players.
"It’s also a massive vote of confidence in Kevin Keegan, who has always wanted Owen to stay."
